HOW IT ALL BEGAN

TYCP is a Drama school developing creativity within young people by providing skills, opportunities and experiences, and supporting them in producing their own exciting work.

The Young Creatives started in Portsmouth in 2013. It stared life as a weekly drama group that supported ages 9-16 in creating their own work. Within a year the group grew so big a change of venue was needed. The following year we were invited to move into the New Theatre Royal and the decision was made to split the group into age range classes, allowing us to open up our support network to a wider age range.

The classes now are structured around the interests and strengths of the children and young people within them. This way the young creatives in each class are always working towards something they enjoy, which means the quality of work produced is higher.

Our relationship with the New Theatre Royal allows us to take advantage of the fantastic shows and companies that perform at the venue, and the theatre casts its child actors for its in house Christmas show from our talented pool of Young Creatives. We also have a strong relationship with the BA Film Department at Portsmouth University allowing as to work alongside degree students. This provides a vast number of opportunities for our Young Creatives to gain film acting experience, as child roles are also cast from our pool of young actors.

Our Artistic Director has been working within schools in Hampshire for 10 years, teaching drama and creating workshops to enhance the school curriculum topics. 2020 will see the opening of a training scheme allowing post graduates of TYC to learn how to create work for schools.

With the success of  The Young Creatives Portsmouth the same format was brought to Havant with two classes opening in 2018. We hope to connect with the community of Havant and its cultural and arts business's  so that our Havant Young Creatives can gain as many opportunities and experiences. The aims of TYC classes across the board have only strengthened since opening in 2013.
